The choice of aggregates can have a significant effect on the color of concrete, especially decorative concrete mixes made with white cement. The choice of sand used in the mix is crucial, as fine sand particles may act like a pigment and possibly alter the intended cement paste color.
Most colored concrete work can be done using gray cement, native Wisconsin aggregates, and standard pigment colors. White cement is typically used in special architectural concrete applications, especially when owners and designers want pastels, creams, ivories, or rose-tone concrete finishes.
