CONCRETE ADMIXTURES ADD VALUE

Though nothing added to a concrete mix is a substitute for following fundamentals of good concreting practice, admixtures can help construction professionals get what they want and need from a concrete mix for a particular project application, including enhancements in strength, durability, workability, water-tightness, finishability, or wear resistance.

Admixtures are natural or manufactured chemical ingredients for concrete, other than cement, water, and aggregate, which are added to the mixture immediately before or during the mixing process.  Some of the more commonly used admixtures include air-entraining, water-reducing, set-retarding, set-accelerating, coloring, and pumping-aid admixtures.

Finely divided mineral admixtures, including fly ash, silica fume, ground granulated blast furnace slag, hydraulic hydrated lime, can also be used to enhance or change one or more properties of concrete in its plastic or hardened state.

Admixtures help contractors overcome construction project challenges, including early and/or ultimate strength requirements, low water/cement ratio specifications, pumping requirements, and hot or cold weather placement.

Admixtures can also help contractors improve project quality, accelerate construction schedules, and reduce in-place concrete costs.
