FLOWABLE FILL (CLSM)Delivered to the job site in a ready-mix truck, flowable fill looks like and has the consistency of a gray-brown pancake batter. Because it can be placed in one lift with minimal labor and no vibration or tamping and reaches almost 100% compaction within a few hours of placement, Flowable Fill provides significant productivity and economic gains over conventional backfill methods. Flowable Fill is composed of fly ash, sand, cement, and water, and can be proportioned by Schmitz Ready Mix to meet the strength and flowability requirements for specific project applications. As there are significant benefits over conventional backfill methods in equipment, excavation, placement, safety, inspection, storage, clean up, and downtime, Flowable Fill can be used as a cost-effective alternative whenever compacted granular fill is specified. Typical Flowable Fill applications include road cuts, sewer and utility backfill, building excavations, culvert backfill, foundation sub-bases, temporary slabs, pipe bedding, retaining and frost wall backfill, road base or slope stabilization, mud mats, soil erosion control, and paving sub-base repair. Flowable Fill is also the perfect solution for filling inaccessible areas, such as underground tanks, pavement voids, and abandoned tunnel shafts and sewers. Schmitz ready mix also produces high air content Flowable Fill for thermal insulation applications. Subsidence and permeability of Flowable Flow mixes vary, based on specific applications. High water content Flowable Flow mixes generally subside 0.25-inch per foot of depth. The permeability of most Flowable Flow mixes is similar to or less than compacted soil. An in-depth discussion of the technical merits of Flowable Flow can be found in the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) publication, Flowable Fill, a read-only version of which can be accessed by clicking here. A web site produced by NRMCA is dedicated to providing reliable information for construction professionals about flowable fill. Please visit www.flowablefill.org.
